Art print sizes for Etsy: which files to include

Etsy lets you attach five files of up to 20 MB each to a digital listing. Make one file for each of five ratios, 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11×14 and the A sizes, each at its largest size, and buyers can print most standard sizes from 4 × 6 in up to 24 × 36 in.

Five files that cover most print sizes

Make each file at the largest size in its ratio, at 300 PPI. Buyers can then print any smaller size of the same shape from it without cropping and without losing sharpness.

Name each file after its ratio and sizes, such as ratio-4x5-8x10-16x20.jpg, so buyers know which one to send to the printer. The art print sizes guide lists every size in each ratio.

Keeping each file under 20 MB

Save as JPEG, not PNG. For paintings and photographs a high-quality JPEG is a fraction of the size of a PNG and prints the same.
Check the largest files. At 300 PPI, 24 × 36 in is 7,200 × 10,800 px and can pass 20 MB. Lower the JPEG quality a step at a time until it fits.
A ZIP doesn’t get round the limit. The 20 MB cap applies to each file you attach, ZIP files included.

Selling to the UK and Europe

Buyers outside North America print in centimetres and A sizes. The A-size file already covers A5 to A1. If most of your buyers are in the UK or Europe, swap the 11 × 14 in file for a 5:7 file at 50 × 70 cm, a common poster and frame size there, and give every size in centimetres as well as inches.

What to write in the listing

Every size included, grouped by ratio, in inches and centimetres.
That it is a digital download and nothing is posted.
That the frame shown in the photos is not included, if you show one.
That colours can look different on screen and in print, depending on the printer and paper.

Listing photos that show the size

Etsy recommends listing photos at least 2,000 pixels on the shortest side, in a 4:3 landscape shape. The first photo is the one shown in search, so make it the work on a wall.

The work in a room, at its real size. A mockup that stretches a small print across a wall sells a size you don’t make, and buyers find out when they print it.
Two or three sizes in the same room. Like the comparison above, it answers “which size should I buy?” before a buyer has to ask.
The work in different rooms. A living room, a bedroom and an office show buyers it suits more than one wall.
A chart of the files included. The ratios and sizes, so buyers know what they get.
