How to show art at scale so buyers know its size

The short answer: give the dimensions in both units, and show the work next to something everyone knows the size of, ideally the furniture it would hang above.

“Smaller than I expected” is one of the commonest reasons art bought online is returned. Here are five ways to stop it.

  • Sample painting at 16 × 20 in (41 × 51 cm): Contemporary bedroom with a large window

  • Sample painting at 24 × 30 in (61 × 76 cm): Contemporary bedroom with a large window

The same sample painting at 8 × 10, 16 × 20 and 24 × 30 in above the same bed. A flat photo of it looks the same at every size. Hang your own work in this room.

1. Give the size in both units, framed and unframed

Write “60 × 80 cm (23.6 × 31.5 in), 70 × 90 cm framed”, width first. Buyers in the US think in inches, everyone else in centimetres, and a frame can add 10 cm or more each way. Put the size in the first line of the description, not at the bottom.

2. Add a scale reference

Pick something with a size everyone knows. A sofa, a bed, a dining chair, a door or a fireplace work at any scale. Hands and coins suit only small works on paper. A ruler is accurate but gives no feeling of size.

3. Show it above furniture, at its real size

This is the one that matters. A work above a sofa or a bed shows its size relative to something the buyer has at home. The work must be at its real size in the room, though; a mockup template that puts every work in the same frame does the opposite. See the wall art size guide for the sizes that suit common furniture.

4. Show the same room at several sizes

If a print comes in several sizes, show them side by side in one room, as in the picture above. A buyer choosing between 30 × 40 cm and 50 × 70 cm can see the difference at a glance instead of working it out.

5. Put a person beside it

For large canvases and sculpture, nothing reads faster than a person standing beside the work. If a photographer isn’t an option, Situ.art can add a figure to a room scene, at the right scale, with the work left untouched.

Questions

Why do buyers think art is bigger than it is?
A photo of the work alone fills the screen whatever its size, and most mockup templates use one frame size for every work. Without furniture or a person beside it, a 20 cm study and a 100 cm canvas look the same.
What is the best scale reference for art?
Furniture people know the size of: a sofa, a bed, a dining chair or a fireplace. A person standing beside a large work also works well. Coins and hands only suit small works.
How do I show a painting at its real size online?
List its dimensions in centimetres and inches, then show it in a room where it hangs at those dimensions. Situ.art does this from the photo and the size alone: the work hangs at its real size, at a realistic height, in hundreds of real rooms.
