How to read the results
Frame size. Ready-made frames are sold by the size of the picture they hold, so a 30 × 40 cm frame takes a 30 × 40 cm mount, and the frame itself is a little larger.
Mount. The card border around the print, at the sides and at the top and bottom, measured from the edge of the window as framers quote it. With a ready-made frame they often differ by a centimetre or so.
Window. The opening cut in the mount, a little smaller than the print so the mount holds its edges.
On the wall. The whole frame, moulding included, which is the size that hangs. The calculator shows it at that size in real rooms.

Questions
What size frame do I need for an A4 print?
With no mount, an A4 frame. With a mount, a 30 × 40 cm frame is the usual choice: the mount is 5 cm at the sides and 5.7 cm at the top and bottom. An A3 frame also takes it, with a mount of 4.9 cm at the sides and 6.7 cm at the top and bottom.
What size frame do I need for an 8 × 10 print with a mat?
An 11 × 14 in frame. Its mat is 1.75 in at the sides and 2.25 in at the top and bottom, with a window of 7.5 × 9.5 in so the mat holds the print’s edges. Without a mat, an 8 × 10 in frame takes the print on its own.
What size frame do I need for an A3 print?
With no mount, an A3 frame. With a mount, a 40 × 50 cm frame: the mount is 5.7 cm at the sides and 4.5 cm at the top and bottom.
How wide should a mount be?
Framers usually make a mount 10 to 25% of the print’s short side. The calculator aims for about 15%, never less than 3 cm: about 3 cm for an A4 print. Ready-made frames come in set sizes, so their mounts are rarely exact. The calculator lists the frames closest to that width first.
Is a mount the same as a mat?
Yes. Mount is the usual word in the UK, mat (or matte) in the US. Both mean the card border between the print and the frame.
Why is the mount window smaller than my print?
So the mount can hold the print in place. The window is cut about 0.5 cm smaller on each side (¼ in for inch sizes), and the mount covers that strip of the print’s edge.
Should the bottom of the mount be wider?
Ready-made mounts are cut with the window in the middle, and the calculator shows them that way. Framers sometimes add 1 to 2 cm at the bottom of a made-to-measure mount, so the print doesn’t look as if it is sliding down. For more on sizes, see the print size calculator and the print size chart.
